Jimmy Butler's decision to sign with the Miami Heat just got super awkward

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The start of NBA free agency didn’t disappoint. The Knicks struck out, there was plenty of tampering, Stephen A. Smith had a meltdown. But in non-Kevin Durant news, Jimmy Butler is heading to the Miami Heat in a sign-and-trade deal with the 76ers.

It didn’t take long for NBA fans to throw some awkwardness into the Butler-Miami marriage either.

As it was pointed out back when Butler demanded a trade from the Timberwolves, he once told Chicago Splash in an interview that the one thing he would never wear was a Miami Heat jersey.

Mind you, this was a 2013 interview in the midst of the LeBron-Bosh-Wade dynasty, but NBA Twitter doesn’t forget.

If “never” means “just five years” then Butler was keeping his word, but I don’t think it works quite that way.

On the other hand, Durant told fans back in 2017 that he would “NEVER” play for the Knicks, and he wasn’t kidding — he signed with the Nets.
